Interested in creating your own professional-quality maps? The Library recently initiated a subscription to SimplyMap Canada, a web mapping application from Geographic Research Inc. that lets you create thematic maps and reports using demographic, business, and marketing data.
SimplyMap Canada is remarkably easy to use and lets you create maps almost instantaneously once you have selected your variables. It also offers a range of editing functions that let you control how datasets are displayed in your map after you have created it.
GIS experience is not necessary to use this product but familiarity with census geography (census tracts, census subdivisions, etc.) is beneficial. A 6-minute introductory video and several more in-depth tutorials are available within SimplyMap Canada to help you get started.
SimplyMap Canada lets you export maps as high-resolution images to use in reports and presentations. Data can be exported into Microsoft Excel worksheets and Microsoft Word documents.
To access SimplyMap Canada, visit Research Databases, click on "S" and scroll down to SimplyMap Canada. The first time you visit this resource you will need to create a personal workspace.
