Introducing Colin Fitzsimons

The Library welcomes Colin Fitzsimons to the Cataloguing Department for an eight-month co-op work term.

In this position, Colin works on a wide variety of cataloguing projects, including updating authority and bibliographic records and helping to update the Cataloguing Department’s section on the Library’s website.

Colin arrives at the Library one course away from completing his Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program at Western. Before embarking upon a career in librarianship, Colin earned a Bachelor of Arts in History at Western and worked in a variety of positions, including as a graphic designer, as a researcher, and as a manager at Loblaws.

When asked to describe the most interesting or unusual item he has come across while cataloguing so far, Colin mentions the books destined for the Musagetes Architecture Library. “These books are generally very unique and interesting,” he says. “I’ve encountered books with pop-ups models and flip books built into the main body. Some of them are unbelievably beautiful.”

Beyond cataloguing, Colin is also interested in other areas of librarianship such as digital applications of instruction and reference within libraries. “I like working with people and believe strongly in libraries’ essentiality in helping people find what they need when they are confronted with so much information,” he says.

Outside of work, Colin likes to work out and read. He also admits to having “an embarrassingly large record collection,” which upon further prodding, he reveals includes upwards of 10,000 records.

A warm welcome to Colin!
