Oxford Bibliographies Online

Humanities and social sciences researchers take note! The Library recently initiated a subscription to Oxford Bibliographies Online (OBO), a unique resource designed to provide students and scholars with authoritative research guidance in a wide range of subject areas.

Part-encyclopedia and part-bibliography, OBO lists and links to essential resources in each discipline. The Library’s current OBO subscription includes the following large collections:

Within these subject collections, there are over 275 entries on topics such as "Alexander the Great," "Marriage and the Family," "Illuminated Manuscripts," "William Shakespeare," and "the Enlightenment."

Each topic entry provides a “selective guided tour through the key literature on a topic,” and includes an introduction and sections with annotated references for general overviews, primary sources, textbooks, biographies, journals, and much more.

All references include “Get it! @ Waterloo” linking, as well as linking to WorldCat and GoogleBooks, so it's easy to check if listed resources are available within the Library’s collection or beyond. References can also be easily exported by email or to RefWorks and other citation managers.

Annotated references include links to check for full-text access and options for exporting.

OBO is available through the Library's Research Databases page under "Browse Research Databases by Title" > "O."
