On Friday, June 3, the Witer Learning Resource Centre hosted a very successful book signing featuring Dr. Susan Barry, scholar and author of Fixing My Gaze: A Scientist's Journey into Seeing in Three Dimensions. Barry gave the 22nd annual Dr. Clair Bobier Lecture in Vision at this year's continuing education Optometry conference.

Dr. Barry has been cross-eyed and stereoblind since early infancy but gained stereovision and a remarkable new view of the world in her late forties. Dubbed “Stereo Sue” by Dr. Oliver Sacks in a 2006 New Yorker article by that name, Dr. Barry went on to write her own book Fixing My Gaze, which was published in 2009 (Basic Books).
Fixing My Gaze describes how vision can impact reading and learning in school, challenges the concept of irreversible critical periods in early development, and provides a revelatory account of the brain's capacity to change. It was rated fourth best science book for 2009 by the editors of Amazon.com and selected as one of the best sci-tech books of 2009 by the Library Journal.
If you missed Dr. Barry’s talk and book signing, a copy of Fixing My Gaze is on reserve at the WLRC or you can order your own copy (for only $5.99) from the Book Store.
