Introducing Meredith Fischer

The Library welcomes Meredith Fischer to the Cataloguing Department for an eight-month co-op work-term. In this position, Meredith works on a variety of projects within the Cataloguing Department. Most currently, she is revising and updating catalogue records for books recently added to the Library’s collection.

Meredith is well-acquainted with the University of Waterloo, having completed her BA degree here in 2007 in Honours English Language and Literature. She is now enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science program at the University of Western Ontario and will complete her fourth and final term after finishing her co-op term at the end of December.

Meredith is enjoying her position at the Library so far. “This position is exposing me to my very first experiences cataloguing in a professional environment,” she explains. Prior to this, she has taken courses at Western that address the practice and theory of descriptive cataloguing and she is among the first cohort of students to learn about Resource Description and Access, a new content standard that will eventually supplant the current cataloguing standards.

“Cataloguing can be really stimulating and fun,” Meredith says quite convincingly. “This area of library work seems to be on the cusp of some major changes, and I hope they come soon!”

As a cataloguing perk, Meredith gets to preview all of the Library’s newest books before they reach the shelves. Among her favourites so far are the Library's art books.“The Dana Porter Library has some gorgeous art books,” she says. “When I catalogued a book that was published to accompany an exhibition of Thomas Rowlandson’s work, I was exposed to some strange and wonderful drawings!”

Beyond cataloguing, Meredith is interested in academic publishing and in reference services. Starting this fall, she will be working in reference services, helping visitors at the Dana Porter Library’s research help desk.

Outside of work, Meredith enjoys yoga, soccer, walking her dog Henry, and playing the ukelele. She also enjoys studying book history and print culture.
