The Library welcomed over 200 guests to the Westmount Golf and Country Club last Thursday evening to celebrate the launch of Special Collections Librarian, Susan Saunders Mavor’s book Westmount – The Tie that Binds the Twin Cities: An Illustrated History of Westmount’s 100 Years.

Westmount tells the story of one of the Region’s most interesting and attractive residential neighbourhoods from its origins in 1912 to the present day. It is beautifully written and amply illustrated with photographs of the Westmount neighbourhood throughout the decades.
The evening’s events featured a lively interview with Susan Saunders Mavor by Distinguished Professor Emeritus and celebrated author Dr. John English, as well as a book signing, refreshments, and mingling. Waterloo President Feridun Hamdullahpur was present and joined University Librarian Mark Haslett to introduce the program and welcome the evening’s guests, many of whom were current residents of the Westmount neighbourhood.
Dr. John English interviewed author and Special Collections Librarian Susan Saunders Mavor
During the interview, Mavor described her motivation for writing this book and shared fascinating highlights from her “intoxicating and consuming research journey,” which included serendipitous discoveries, many conversations with current and former Westmount residents, and extensive use of some of the Library’s own archival collections.
"A long-time resident, Susan Mavor knows her community intimately - its people, houses, schools, and rhythms," English describes in the book's preface. "Throughout the intriguing tales that she tells of real estate speculation, economic challenges, and personal trials and triumphs, there is a sense of how a community takes form and develops identity."
The Library is delighted for Mavor's accomplishment.
“We knew that this book would be something special,” Mark Haslett said during the evening's opening remarks. “And indeed it is.”
