The Canadian Journal of Disability Studies

The new issue of the Canadian Journal of Disability Studies is now available. This journal is supported by the Canadian Disability Studies Association and the University of Waterloo and is hosted by the Library using the Open Journal Systems (OJS), a platform for hosting open-access journals.

The Canadian Journal of Disability Studies is a free, open-access journal devoted to cutting edge research in the field, from Canada and around the world. The journal’s current issue has the theme of "Disability Mediations" - how disability is represented from within and without, through and across the media.

This journal is the first journal that the Library has hosted. The Library has previous experience with OJS though, with the creation of Engine in 2008. Engine is a pre-print service for the IEEE-affiliate Vehicular Technology Society. Engineering faculty member, Weihua Zhuang, is the editor for the Vehicular Technology Society and worked with the Library to create Engine.

“The Library is interested in piloting hosting and support for open access journals both for faculty and students here at Waterloo,” says Pascal Calarco, the Library’s Associate University Librarian for Digital & Discovery Services. “Once the technical infrastructure is set up, we can add new journals fairly easily."

The Library would be interested in talking with other faculty and graduate students who would like to start a new open access journal and will support these as a pilot service through Fall 2012, when we will decide the extent to which we will expand this service.
