Introducing Katherine Frankovich

The Library is pleased to welcome 2nd-year planning student Katherine Frankovich as the GIS Library Technician in the Geospatial Centre.

Katherine started in this newly-created co-op position on May 1 – the same day that the Geospatial Centre opened for business in the Dana Porter Library. In this position, Katherine provides students with research support relating to geographic information systems (GIS) information. She also works on a range of special projects within the Geospatial Centre.

“I’m currently working on a project to create a movie using historical aerial photos and Google Earth imagery of the campus to display the changes on the main campus over time,” Katherine says. “I’m also working on another project to scan and georeference aerial photos of the Region of Waterloo from 1963, to eventually make them available digitally on the Geospatial Centre’s website.”

Katherine describes working in the Geospatial Centre as “fantastic” so far and she also finds it very relevant to her studies. “A lot of what I’m learning now will be applicable to my program and projects I will be working on in the future,” she says. “The biggest thing I’ve realized while working here is the extensive information that is available to students. The best advice I could give to students is to just come in and take a look around at what’s available to use for their assignments.”

Outside of work, Katherine enjoys relaxing outdoors with friends, enjoying the summer weather.
