“Becoming a Canadian”: The Breithaupt Family JourneyPicture of Jane Britton
A presentation by Special Collections Archivist Jane Britton
Monday, October 22, 1:30-3:30 pm
Waterloo Region Museum

In 1861 Louis P. Breithaupt moved his family from Buffalo to Berlin, Ontario, the first step on a path that led to becoming the town’s foremost family in business, social, religious and political life. Donations of the Breithaupt family papers to the University of Waterloo Library between 1987 and 2005 have provided rich evidence of the process and extent of cultural change in an area unique in Canada, and through which the immigrant experience in Canada can be elucidated. The reuniting of these family papers that now span more than 100 years in the history of one family has opened new avenues for looking at our community’s past.
