The James & Elise Devitt Study Room
The study room renovation is part of a larger, continuing renovation of the 6th floor that was made possible through a transformational $100,000 gift from Elise Devitt in memory of her late husband, James Devitt.
The floor’s renovation will continue for some time. In addition to the study room, workstation area with barstool seating, and low-shelving units, the redesign of the floor will include:
The grand opening of the James & Elise Devitt Study Room took place on Monday, December 17 in an event that brought together Elise Devitt, her family and friends, and invited library staff to celebrate over refreshments, remarks, and a slideshow featuring pictures of the renovation.
The grand opening included remarks from Elise Devitt; University Librarian, Mark Haslett; Vice-President of Advancement, Ken McGillivray; and a personal friend and former colleague of Elise’s, Dr. William Pulleyblank, who is Professor of Operations Research at the United States Military Academy and also a former uWaterloo professor and current member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Quantum Computing.
“Elise’s gift has enabled the Library to envision possibilities for how an entire floor can be redesigned to best meet students’ needs,” Mark Haslett remarked at the opening. “It is a gift that inspires others to see first-hand the impact that their support can make to students at Waterloo.”
The Library thanks Elise Devitt for her generous support! Students will benefit from this renovation immediately and for many, many years to come.
