Introducing Walter Miedema

Walter Miedema is a man with his nose in the books! As the Library's latest cataloguing co-op student, he catalogues many of the Library’s newest materials to make them discoverable and available for students, faculty, and staff to borrow.

Walter started at the Library in September and will be here until the end of April.

“Cataloguing was new for me,” says Walter. “I did have indexing experience from when I worked in the library while attending seminary, but it was a big learning curve at first. I’m enjoying it.”

As one of the Library’s cataloguers, Walter gets to see all of the new books as they arrive. The book that’s caught his attention the most so far is one called Cyborg Selves : A Theology of the Post Human. Walter explains, “I actually took it out after it was processed and lent it to my friend who’s a chaplain on campus.”

Walter comes to the Library from Western where he is currently completing his MLIS degree. He has his BA in English and Theatre (double major) from Redeemer University College in Ancaster and also has a Master of Divinity from Calvin Theological Seminary.

In addition to cataloguing, Walter is also a member of the Library's Instruction Committee and has been actively involved in the Library’s Outreach activities. He helped to build the Dana Porter’s popular book tree in December and also made a memorable appearance volunteering at Library Day on Halloween dressed as the Mexican Wrestler.

During the winter term, Walter will be working on the Davis Centre Library’s Research Help Desk, helping students with their research questions.

Outside of work, Walter enjoys reading folktales, exploring cities, playing board games, watching movies and theatre, and "attempting to make art."
