Looking for historical maps of the Waterloo region? The Geospatial Centre is now making historical maps of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo available for viewing on its website.
Geospatial Centre staff have scanned, digitized, and georeferenced Waterloo historical maps from the years 1815-1921 and have integrated these maps onto their website, taking advantage of Google Earth’s web functionality.
Once you choose a historical map from the list, it is displayed on the screen overlaying Google’s current map of the region. You can then zoom in and out on the historical map and adjust the opacity of the map to make quick comparisons between the historical and current maps.
The video below shows what it looks like to view, zoom, and adjust the opacity of the historical maps. To try things out for yourself, you will need to download the Google Earth plug-in for your browser (a very quick download).
Geospatial Centre staff have received a lot of positive feedback about the historical map website from researchers so far and have noticed an increased interest in the use of historical maps since the project launch.
Printing or downloading of the maps is not currently available due to copyright restrictions.
