Calculate Your Academic Footprint

Interested in tracking citation counts for your publications? Librarian Kathy MacDonald recently transformed her popular “Calculating your Academic Footprint” workshop into an online guide to provide faculty and graduate students with information on how to determine their research impact with respect to citation metrics.

The Calculate Your Academic Footprint guide includes information on how to find, collect, and manage your citations from multiple sources in order to ascertain current, robust, accurate, and transparent proof of citation counts. It includes:

• General information about the citation tracking process and why research impact is important
  
  
• Links to key sites for creating and maintaining your academic profile
  
  
• Detailed instructions for finding and managing your citations, including recommendations for what databases to search (Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, IEEE, etc.)
  
  
• Guidance on how to analyse citations to determine accurate counts
  
  
• An overview of the h-index and how you can determine your h-index

Faculty and graduate students are increasingly using citation counts for tenure and promotion documentation, grant applications, and to determine their h-index.
