In an effort to simplify our in-person services for students and other visitors, the Library is piloting a single-service desk model in the Davis Centre Library for the next year. This pilot aims to take the guesswork out of “whom do I ask about this?” whenever questions arise, by cross-training circulation and research help staff to a greater extent. This will greatly reduce the need to refer users to a different staff member. Technical support questions will still be handled separately.

During this pilot, library staff will be working on the desk and behind the scenes to evaluate how effectively this service meets the needs of students, faculty, and other library visitors. Staff will also be investigating other ideas for providing services that have traditionally or predominantly been offered in-person (like research help) in ways that extend beyond our physical locations to reach our users wherever they happen to be.
Results of this pilot will inform the future design of our service desks, staffing models, and signage and promotion.
We’d love to hear from you during this pilot to know what you think of our evolving desk service.
