The Library congratulates Susan Arruda on her recent promotion to Manager of Circulation Services: Collection Maintenance. Regular visitors to the Dana Porter Library will recognize Susan as one of the Library’s most visible staff members, as she spends much of her time in the public areas directing efforts to maintain the Library’s physical collections.
In her new position, Susan has overall responsibility for collections maintenance activities within Circulation Services, which includes binding, inventory, and de-selection projects, as well as the ongoing maintenance of the book stacks. She also coordinates large-scale collection shifts that are required either to accommodate collection growth or create space for renovations.

“My broad mandate is to ensure the Dana Porter and Davis Centre libraries’ physical collections are maintained in the best manner possible in order to facilitate access to the materials,” Susan says. “Much of my position also involves providing collections-related data for, and collaborating with, librarians to help ensure that the Library’s physical collections space is fully utilized to enhance teaching, learning, and research.”
Susan has worked in the Library full-time since 1982 when she started as a Library Clerk in the Cataloguing Department. Since this time, she has held a variety of positions in Government Publications, Acquisitions, and Circulation Services. Most recently, she was the Dana Porter Library’s Collections Maintenance Supervisor.
When reflecting on her 31 years in the Library, Susan appreciates the Library’s “continuous improvement environment,” the support of her many colleagues over the years, and the fact that the Library’s workplace culture truly lives up to the Basic Principles of the University of Waterloo workplace.
“One of the highlights of my positions within the Library so far has been the opportunity to work with our student staff,” Susan notes. “It has been so rewarding to watch how successful the students I’ve worked with over the years have become. They are truly the brightest and the best!”
Outside of work, Susan enjoys music, travel, and movies. She also thrives on “all things social” and enjoys entertaining and coordinating social gatherings.
