The Library now offers the Alternative Press Index — the most complete guide to alternative and radical media, plus a guide to publishers' addresses.
The Alternative Press Index (API) is widely regarded as the leading guide to alternative press in North America. Citations are drawn from approximately 300 alternative, radical, and left wing publications that report and analyze the practices and theories of cultural, economic, political, and social change. Ninety per cent of the publications indexed in API are unique, as they are not indexed in the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature or the Social Sciences Index.
The API (1991-present) is produced by the Alternative Press Centre in Baltimore. It indexes articles of 5 or more paragraphs, including: editorials, regular columns, essays, fiction, speeches, interviews, statistics, reprints, bibliographies, directories, autobiographies, biographies, obituaries, reviews pertaining to books, film, records, TV, drama, arts, and multimedia. Coverage is international and interdisciplinary. API is updated every three months.
Specific topics and areas covered by API include: anarchism, democracy, indigenous peoples, labour, national liberation, socialism, ecology, feminism, and gay and lesbian issues.
Many journal titles are covered by the Alternative Press Index.
