Dealing with Noise through Renovation - Davis Library Project Plan
Context/Background
The Davis Library is a popular place for students to study and congregate. Noise levels and complaints about noise escalate with popularity. In recent years, the Library has responded to the noise problems with extraordinary measures which focused on behavioural intervention through:
- Designating silent and quiet noise zones
- Limiting cell phone use in Library to texting
- Hiring noise monitors during the busiest times of the day and term
- Removing seating from the most problematic area (22 tables and 88 chairs)
- Despite these measures, the noise levels and the resulting complaints continue and create tension between students and staff alike.
Goal
Without increasing the footprint of the DC Library, improve the student learning experience and the working environment for staff through renovations that eliminate noise complaints
Project Assumptions
In consultation with library staff and students who will use and support the space,
- problematic areas will be identified throughout the Library
- separation between group and individual study areas will be improved
- architectural solutions will respect the principles of accessibility and universal design
- recommendations will be developed with cost estimates
- funds will be provided through operating budgets and/or previously received donations
