David Warne walked the Committee through the most recent revision (version

images/library-layout9.pdf)
of the library layout. Some concerns/comments expressed were:
- main entrance to the Library may have a roll-down steel gate
- an issue of safety in book shelves being 7’ high and unsupported
- washroom door should be in a more accessible area than having to walk
through the copy room
- there should be a door between the public area and the staff workroom
- display wall
- one part could be environmentally controlled
- glass should have UV filters
- a very high traffic area
- Rare book room
- compact shelving requires reinforced floor
- Spacesaver has offered to donate the shelving throughout the library, but
have some restrictions regarding “being able to see it”.
- photocopying in the rare book room is available, but not encouraged
- move the table to the central wall in the reading room, which would enable
a photocopier to be placed in the vault on the opposite side and not be visible
to the public. This would allow a full glass wall on the outside/public wall.
- Security system
- motion detectors and key structure
- two separate keypads for the vault and public area
- security glass
- early smoke detection in vault area
- if there are water pipes above, then water detectors should be considered
- environment control unit will be located on the roof
- what is the height of shelves in the rare book room? – there is a concern
of lack of circulation if shelves go right to the ceiling – floor to ceiling
is 12’
Next steps:
David will make changes and send a pdf file to Michele, which she will distribute
to the committee for approval/sign-off in a week. Richard will update LBPC and
get their approval of the final plan.
Next meeting – Richard will advise.
