Community Needs Assessment Group
Meeting:#9 (January 23, 1996)

Time: 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Place: Dana Porter 428
Purpose: Review Simon Fraser Surveys

Present: Jane Britton, Amos Lakos, Sharon Lamont, Wendy Macpherson, Ann Naese, Laurie Strome

Absent: Shabiran Rahman, Mary Stanley

  1. Agenda accepted.

  2. Summary of Meeting #8, Jan. 16, 1996 noted.

  3. Business Arising:
    1. Evaluation Workshop: Wendy reported that Roger Mannell is now ready for us. Anne Fullarton has asked if she may also attend and we have agreed that one more is not too many. We will also keep in mind that this might be a useful workshop for a more general library audience, to spread some common concepts and vocabulary.

*ACTION WENDY: Wendy will let R. Mannell know that there will be another person attending.
    2. In the past week we received copies of the Library's mini-survey with a covering letter from Murray. Jane distributed a handout relating to performance measures.

  4. Mini-Reports on Simon Fraser Surveys
Laurie Strome and Mary Stanley looked at Results From a Survey of SFU Students, June 1995. Sharon Lamont and Wendy Macpherson looked at Results From a Survey of SFU Faculty, March 1995. Ann Naese and Jane Britton looked at Materials Availability Study. In general we found that we reacted to the same things: the surveys are shot, have summaries before presenting data, have visual impact with a mix of charts and tables, are easy to read, and contain appendices with full information. This exercise has been a good introduction for us to look at our own surveys.

*ACTION AMOS: Amos will begin (continue) to build a library of resources to be used by anyone interested and will communicate this outside our group.

  5. We had some discussion about Anne Fullarton's query re the Engineering Faculty's upcoming survey of Engineering faculty Computing needs and whether we shouldn't share with them the Library survey on user needs and the survey done on non-traditional media to get them thinking beyond their own office/research computing needs. We decided that it was probably premature for us to make any assumptions about their survey or to take any action.

  6. The meeting adjourned at 10:30
