Community Needs Assessment Process Group
Meeting: #25 (July 16, 1996)
Present:
Jane Britton, Amos Lakos, Sharon Lamont (recorder), Wendy
Macpherson, Ann Naese, Shabiran Rahman, Mary Stanley,
Laurie Strome (facilitator)
- System Department Priorities
Review of the memo from Bill Oldfield. As a group, we might
request statistical information as we require it (eg. circulation
statistics); therefore, providing such information upon demand
is a high priority. As individuals, we determined that public
services, CD-Rom upgrades, disaster recovery plans, and the
HelpDesk are priority items.
- public services includes maintenance and
upgrading of the workstations
- CD-Roms
should be upgraded upon receipt
- the HelpDesk should provide immediate
assistance during User Education workshops
We also suggest that the Systems department get out of the
business of training and acting as consultants for software
packages, such as WordPerfect and Excel. We consider this essential
aspect to be an inferior duplication of the systems support
provided by IST. In addition, considerable confusion was expressed
by members of the group about whether or not library staff
can contact IST staff directly for individual training or consultation:
some have been told specifically not to (even though staff
are encouraged to attend IST computing workshops) while others
do so fairly regularly.
- UW Electronic Library
Questionnaire
We believe that it is not enough to base changes to the UW
Electronic Library homepage on the opinion of the information desk
staff only and that a survey of the users (students and faculty) should
be conducted. Community Needs Assessment will be looking into working
with IRC to conduct such a survey
- TUG - Focus groups
Mary will find out who are the experts on campus (perhaps through
Roger Mannell or TRACE).
- Survey Reports:
Faculty survey -- Shabiran has submitted it to Amos.
Undergrad and Graduate surveys -- should be submitted by the end of this
week.
Amos and Sharon will edit the report next week with the goal of
presenting a draft at our next meeting.
