Community Needs Assessment Committee • Minutes

Meeting Notes #37 (March 18, 1997)

Present: Amos Lakos, Shabiran Rahman(facilitator), Sharon Lamont, Laurie Strome, Ann Naese (recorder)
Absent: Connie Pantic, Wendy Macpherson, Mary Stanley

  1. The minutes of February 25, 1997 meeting were approved as distributed.

  2. Membership

Process group membership was reviewed. Two year membership terms are coming due in May to coincide with the fiscal year. Since the Process Groups are new some members will have a 3 year term to allow for consistency.

Connie recently replaced one member and will be remaining as a member. Membership terms will be extended until May 1998 for Amos, Sharon and perhaps Shabiran. Sharon will contact Mary Stanley about her membership intent. The two year membership term for Wendy, Laurie and Ann will end May 1997.

Action: Amos will draft a memo to Library staff about vacancies and possible interest in being part of CNAG.

  3. Patron Needs Form

An idea for a form to be developed for "Patron Needs" was brought forth through User Education Committee. It came from a User Services request for a more formal mechanism to handle patron's needs.

With the coming changes in operating systems CNAG decided that developing a form would not be appropriate at this time. This idea can re-examined after the new systems have been operating for awhile. User Services staff can direct patrons to the Dear Library Board, AskLib, or staff can contact any member of CNAG with a patron's needs or concerns.

Action: Ann will report decision to User Education Committee and the User Services staff member.

  4. Report on Study Space

Amos and Sharon presented a draft of the Study Space Report.

Action: Members are to e-mail comments about the draft to the group.

The group recommended a background research on study space be completed (perhaps on ERIC). Other study space data that could be included in the report are:

    a) 1993/94 Report of the Survey of the Information Needs

    b) weekend survey statistics - Shabiran will supply

    c) Porter late night occupancy statistics from the Walk Safe Program - Sharon will supply

CNAG discussed conducting focus groups this term on study space in Porter and Davis. There would be 4 sessions for each Library with 8-10 people attending each session. Due to time constraints a convenience approach will be used to recruit participants. A more systematic random search for participants could be completed for fall term focus groups.

Action: Amos will notify Council about the focus group sessions.

Action: Shabiran will expedite the Office of Human Research and Animal

Care form after CNAG has completed the form.

Next meeting: March 25, 1997 9:30-11:00 Porter, Rm 428
