Community Needs Assessment Committee • Minutes

Minutes # 39 - April 23, 1997

Present: Amos Lakos, Sharon Lamont, Connie Pantic - facilitator, Laurie Strome - recorder
Absent: Ann Naese, Wendy MacPherson, Shabiran Rahman, Mary Stanley

1. Minutes of the Previous Meeting

Corrections: Meeting #37 should read Meeting #38; Shabiran Rahman was present; date of the next meeting is April 23. Approved as corrected.

2. Business Arising

No applications for membership were received. A review of applications by other Process Groups gave ideas which may encourage interest. Concerns were raised regarding support from Department Heads. Amos will discuss this at Library Council.

Sharon Lamont will be back-up to Amos on Library Council. Shabiran Rahman may be called upon at the last minute to fill in.

3. Recommendations from the Davis Reconfiguration Task Force - Sharon Lamont

The "Recommendations" report was distributed prior to the meeting. Sharon described and answered questions regarding impact upon students, costs, timing, etc. CNAPG supports Phase 1 implementation but recommends that the Phase 2 does not move ahead before CNAPG completes the Study Space Report. This report will in all likelihood include a recommendation to hire an outside consultant.

4. Re-Organizing the Study Space Focus Groups - Amos Lakos

  Brainstorming

1. Class visits - may be done by liaison librarians

2. Lab visits - may be done by liaison librarians

3. Posters/flyers - can be worked on immediately

4. Gazette/Imprint - dates need to be known in advance, cost approval

5. Web pages/e-mail - a feedback on the Library web page. Students can

electronically let us know their interests. Invitations can be sent out via e-mail

and specific faculties can be targeted.

6. Student Reps - can be solicited to encourage students

7. Mail invitations to target groups

8. Make contact with students at Circulation desk at point of registration;

extend invitation during Library Orientation tours. A card which the student

can sign and then submit may be given out with the Library mini guide. (Are you

interested in participating in discussion groups to provide feedback ....)

9. entrance/exit interviews - too costly

10. Invite casual Library staff and invite them to bring a buddy - it was felt these

students have obtained a bias and would not be suitable.

11. Direct contact with students while they are studying in the library.

12. Immediate call for volunteers to do a Focus Group on the spot.

13. Bribes - would Graphic Services be willing to subsidize costs if we were

to offer $2 or $5 venda cards as incentive to participate.

*It was felt that action could be taken this summer to begin implementing #8.

Amos and Sharon would like to try again in June .
