Thursday, February 6, 2003
10:00-11:10am
Porter Meeting Room 512A

Present: Anne Fullerton, Wish Leonard, Shabiran Rahman, Jamie Russell, Heather Schaaf, Alexandra Stathopoulos (recorder)
Regret: Jane Britton

1. Approval of Minutes of Last Meeting

The minutes of the last meeting were approved with changes.

2. Assessment Project Web Form

The committee decided to add a “Results” statement to the bottom of the web form similar to: “Once the project is finished, please send CNAC all project documents. For example: Project URL/Website, proposal, charter, questionnaire, letters, final report etc…”

A new question will be added to the form regarding applications for ethics clearance and will read: “Have you applied for ethics clearance from the Office of Research”? with Radio button options of either ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.

As an amendment to the Methodology explanation/examples on the web form, the explanation will be changed to read: “How did you collect your data? E.g. survey, interviews, focus group etc…”

The group decided that the primary objective of this web form is to “flush out” any and all library projects that CNAC should be aware of.

3. Review of CNAC web pages

All group members will look over the web pages and bring ideas for improvement to the next meeting. An ultimate goal of a “consistent look and feel” was agreed upon.

4. Review of Assessment Project Form Submissions

Electronic submissions were received from Wish Leonard – Electronic Reserves Phase II, and from Dan Sich – Usability Study of MyOpac features.

The group has requested that Alexandra make space (a link) from the CNAC main web page to a repository for all received Project Form submissions and documentation. The possibility that CNAC would need to be allocated more web space in the future was acknowledged.

5. Nvivo Software

QSR International has produced a piece of software – “Nvivo” that is useful in the analysis of qualitative research studies, particularly responses to open-ended questions. The UW IST department has recommended it for campus use.
One license for the Nvivo software would cost roughly $800 CDN. A request has been initiated for one license.

It was suggested that CNAC members download the Nvivo software demo from the website: http://www.qsr.com.au/products/nvivo.html

6. New Business

a. A new piece of assessment software entitled “Atlas.ti” has been released. Its value lies in its ability to analyze interview content and/or responses to open-ended surveys using SPSS technology.

b. An online Lyceum entitled: “Assessing Library Service Quality” is currently open for registration. It is run 3 times/year with this immediate session beginning Feb 24th, running 6 weeks. The other two sessions will be run in July/Aug and early Fall 2003. Registration fees are covered by the Library for permanent staff members.

It was suggested that CNAC members register for one of the 2003 sessions as a way of further educating themselves on the detailed process of assessment. A positive consensus was reached, and all members who had not already completed the course agreed to enrol in the near future.

c. The Information Services Management Committee (ISMC) has requested a meeting with CNAC (March 4th, 1:30 pm, Porter) to discuss their upcoming project reviewing reference service. Their project charter is posted on the ISMC website at: http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/staff/ismc/topics/reference/ finalcharterl.html

Next Meeting: Thursday, February 20, 2003 in Dana Porter room 512A
