Terms of Reference for a Usability Study of the Library's Web Site
As part of the work associated with on-going development of the Library's web site, CNAG will design and co-ordinate a usability study, focused on the recently redesigned top page, with a view to ensuring that we have an effective and efficient site that meets the needs of our users. This study will be the first stage in a continuing process of assessing and improving usability of the Library's web site. The results of the initial study, and the experience gained through designing and conducting it, will be used in planning future directions.
Specific Responsibilities
- Consider possible methods of conducting usability studies and select a method or methods, e.g. focus groups, one-on-one testing.
- Design a study consistent with the method(s) selected and obtain approval from the Office of Research Ethics.
- If necessary, recruit Library staff to help conduct the study; provide those recruited with appropriate training.
- If funds are required to carry out the study (e.g. remunerate subjects etc.), submit a detailed budget to LBPC for approval.
- Recruit subjects for the study.
- Document and analyze user input from each iteration of the study and determine what changes can be made to the webpage to overcome identified problems.
- Work with the Prototype Developer (yet to be identified) to develop prototypes of the webage which resolve the problems identified. Test each prototype with a new group of subjects, revise the prototypes, and repeat the process until a prototype has been created which seems to best meet the needs of our users.
- Prepare a recommendation about implementation and next steps for review by the newly created ad hoc Web Coordinating Group.
