Digital Library Coordination Committee

Memorandum

TO: Library Staff

FROM: Murray Shepherd

DATE: December 18, 2000

SUBJECT: Digital Library Co-ordination Committee

The Library has in progress a variety of initiatives that fall under what can broadly be called an "information systems and technology" umbrella. Effective co-ordination of these initiatives is vital to their success. A list of some of the initiatives and issues underway or emerging are outlined at: http://library.uwaterloo.ca/staff/dlcc/issues.html

The University of Waterloo and the University of Waterloo Library are recognised as leaders in the application of emerging and advanced technology. The innovative and effective use of information technology will play an important role in the continuing development of the digital library.

The needs and opportunities in the area of information technology are highlighted in several places in the 1999 Information Services Review Report ( http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/News/UWLibDocs/
ISReview/
). Recommendation 6.6 is that the Library "Establish an information technology forum". The recent "Information Services Management Committee (ISMC) report on improving the Working Relationship between the Information Services and Resources Department and the Systems Department" also speaks to the need for Library-wide co-ordination of information systems and technology initiatives.

In order to address these needs, I have asked Mark Haslett to convene the Digital Library Co-ordination Committee (DLCC). The DLCC will be a Library-wide forum for discussion and co-ordination of information systems and technology issues and initiatives in the University of Waterloo Library.

The terms of reference for the DLCC may be found at: http://library.uwaterloo.ca/staff/dlcc/terms.html

The membership of the committee is listed in the terms of reference. If you are interested in serving on the committee please express your interest in writing to Mark before January 12th indicating the reasons for your interest. We hope the committee will be able to begin its work by late January.

I know that you will join me in supporting the work of the DLCC and in wishing them the best.
