Present: Jack Cooper Susan Moskal (Chair); Sandra Keys; Richard Pinnell; Judy McTaggart (Recorder) Shabiran Rahman
Items 1 and 6: the correct spelling is “CRSP” database.
Item 6, CRSP Database, 1 st bullet should read “… Accountancy fund can …”.
Item 2, Co-op student: Jack reported there has been no progress from the last meeting. He will follow up on this and email the group. There was discussion about what the priorities should be for the new co-op student to work on. It was stated there is a need for documentation of web retrieval of TDR data. The current navigation instructions on the page are too complex and need to be revised; and, the TDR help pages also need revision. Shabiran suggested it might be useful to conduct a usability study for the TDR site. Action: Richard will take this issue to OMG.
Add “EDS Web Page” as agenda item #7 and renumber the agenda accordingly.
Update:
There was no report. TDR last met on April 7 and is scheduled to meet next week. Richard did report there appears to be a lag on the TDR site for 2001 profile data at the DA level. The data is available but apparently will not be up on the site until the Fall. The group agreed that, at a minimum, there should be a message indicating the data is available. Clients could then contact one of the EDS members to have the data printed. Action: Richard will take this to the next OMG meeting for discussion.
Web Page Updating (Sandra)
Sandra reported there is an external links page for financial resources at TDR that is out of date. She offered to check the links and submit or make changes. Richard noted that it would be difficult to maintain this as these are external links over which EDS has no control and we do not have the resources to continually update the links. It was suggested the TDR web board would be a useful medium for submitting suggestions for changes. Richard will provide Sandra with the web board information and password.
Sandra reported the TSX Database is currently available in CD-ROM format loaded on one of the dedicated Accountancy workstations plus on the Nexus network. She suggested making the database accessible through TDR. This would be consistent with the access provided by both Guelph and Laurier. Action: Richard will take this to TDR.
Susan reported it is now possible to acquire only the Source OECD statistics without purchasing the periodicals and books. The cost is approximately $6,000. She noted the purchase could be funded in the following manner: $4,000 from the Government Publications fund and $1,000 from the Economics fund, leaving a shortfall of approximately $1,300. Richard stated he would consult with the faculty in Recreation to determine their interest in contributing funds.
Susan noted she has reviewed the list on the prototype for the revised EDS web page and suggested more explanation may be needed for the categories. She also suggested it would be useful to have a secondary page under the Statistics Canada link that would provide all the Statistics Canada related links. Richard noted this would also be useful for the geospatial data. Actions: Richard will create the secondary page for the geospatial data links and send it to Susan; Susan will work on developing the secondary page for the Statistics Canada links. Susan also stated that everyone should review the details on the page for currency and accuracy. She will ask Helen Yueping to make some of the changes and the group can review the page again.
Sandra asked if there were questions arising from the trip report she had previously distributed to the group and noted she had handouts available. Sandra had raised some questions at the end of her report and Susan suggested these questions could be addressed at the next meeting.
The next EDS meeting will be scheduled for July 9 th. One agenda item to be discussed will be “The co-op student for the Fall”. No further meetings will be scheduled until September 10 th.
A special meeting to review and discuss the EDS organization will be scheduled for June 25 th at the normal EDS meeting time. Action: Judy will book a room and notify the group.
