MINUTES OF MEETING, OCTOBER 25, 2000
PRESENT: Jack Cooper Susan Moskal (Facilitator) Judy McTaggart (Recorder) Richard Pinnell
ABSENT: Shabiran Rahman
1. Minutes of Previous Meeting October 11, 2000:
Accepted.
2. Business Arising:
CD-ROM Inventory: Susan will examine.
TDR site visit: The date has been set for Friday afternoon, November 10, 2000.
Data Links: There was discussion on the problems surrounding the printing of the newsletter. Guelph can't use PageMaker for printing and printing costs are more at Waterloo. It was decided we should go ahead and print it here in order to get the newsletter distributed. This will be a one time cost as future issues will be electronic.
EDS web pages: Susan has cleaned up the pages with the assistance of Marina Wan. Richard will hide the links for the defunct Leisure Studies Data Bank.
Printing of Code Books: The statement drafted at the last meeting was approved. A decision needs to be made on where it will be placed.
Cansim Counter: Rather than add a separate page for counting, Doug Horne recommended the number of hits on each page be used as this is already available. Richard will check the web logs to see if these contain the proper information.
3. Frequency of Meetings (Susan Moskal):
There was discussion on whether to hold EDS meetings every two weeks or once a month. It was decided to continue as is (bi-weekly) and cancel a meeting if there is no significant agenda. Susan, as chair, would make the decision.
4. TDR Web Pages
Examination of the content and structure of the TDR web pages was the major focus of discussion at today's meeting. Susan reported she has made changes to the headings, reorganized some categories and sent the file to Richard prior to the meeting.
Richard and Susan looked at the pages and discussed changes that could be made. The following points arose from the discussion:
- categories need to be refined to make them more meaningful
- the structure should be easy to add to
- guidelines need to be established for how it will be structured
- maintenance issues: should be done electronically - headings need geographic and source indicators and the body that created the data
- help pages need major revision
- help has to be more specific and at point of need
It was decided all EDS members would send their feedback to the EDS group. The feedback will be discussed at the next EDS meeting. Richard will then take the submission to TDR OMG.
Next Meeting: November 8, 2000; Porter 224A; 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
