University of Waterloo Electronic Data Service Committee Minutes of the Meeting of November 2, 1994 Present: Doug Morton (chair); Richard Pinnell (secretary), Albert Kemp, Susan Moskal, Bill Oldfield, Carol Vogt cc: Bruce MacNeil, Mike Ridley, Boris Bruder, Charles Woods 1. Minutes of the Previous Meeting - October 26, 1994 item 1, change "Neal Patterson" to "Neil Patterson" item 6, change "which as Web to SAS" to "which is a Web to SAS" 2. Business Arising item 5: Doug has spoken to Boris about EDS orders; they will be handled by one person in MAD, whether the items are monographic or serial in nature. Boris suggested that in order to identify EDS orders we could use the $b subfield in the title field since it is searchable. However Debbie uses the term "datasets" in the $b; one suggestion was to begin using the term "datasets - EDS." item 6: Bill has a copy of the Web to Z39.50 program source code and is trying to compile it on the DEC alpha. item 7: Susan reported that the key to room 222 has been stepped up from the general Reference Office key for security reasons; Susan, Shabiran, and Doug will be the only ones to have this key. Susan will talk to Eric Boyd to ensure that both doors to room 222 are secure. Albert Kemp reported that he is attempting to find a source for the computer equipment we will need for EDS. Ron Press recently purchased equipment with "optimum" components from a local firm for approximately $7,000. Albert will get quotes from Ed Lam, Group 4 CPS and the UW Computer Store. Other possibilities include the Dell computer and the Ambra Pentium. 3. Additional Agenda 7. Violence Against Women 8. U. of Guelph Library 4. CANSIM/EPAS Doug reported that he will give a training session to task group members next week to demo the EPAS software. He mentioned that the browse function gives a warning. Bill will ask Andrea Chappell what priority she will give to providing secure telnet access. He reported that the CANSIM manual requires modification and that Chris Leowski has given us permission to make these changes. Doug will make changes to the manual as required. 5. Census and GSS data Albert reported that he has completed an inventory of the census files that the Library has not yet received; he has emailed this inventory to Laine Ruus but has not yet had a response. Albert has the name of Laine's secretary. He has attempted to obtain a copy of the missing GSS code book from the members of the consortium; he believes he can obtain a copy from the University of Guelph. It was reported that the GSS section of the gopher is completed. The GSS data has been uncompressed and we can now begin to provide the links to it. 6. Progress Report Doug distributed a draft copy of an EDS progress report. It was suggested that we use the term dataset to refer to each electronic resource. The report should make it clear that the service will not be available until January. However, it might be possible to make the GSS data available before then. Four of the 8 series are ready; all that is required is to NFS mount this data and to modify the stub files to include the complete path to the data. Albert will provide the path information to Carol. 7. Violence Against Women Albert reported that the main datafile (6 MB) is available for ftp from EPAS. He will get the data and email Debbie when this has been done, so that she can update her records. 8. University of Guelph Library Bill has been in touch with Alan Gale, Sue Waterman-McLean and others at the University of Guelph Library to discuss areas of cooperation, for example, a cooperative approach to the acquisition of datasets. Guelph is just beginning to consider setting up a data library. He reported that the Economics Department at that university has CANSIM going.
