Minutes of the Previous Meeting - November 16, 1994 item 4, change "xabyte" to "exabyte" 2. Business Arising item 7 (from November 9): it was agreed that Shabiran need not add the sentence about consortia to the About EDS section on the gopher item 2.2.7 Albert reported that PPG has approved the purchase of computer equipment for EDS item 7 Doug reported that room 222 will be keyed at the same level as the rest of the reference area item 9 Linda Howe has asked Carol for information about EDS for an article in the Gazette. Doug spoke with Linda earlier this week and gave her some information. He has also prepared a release about EDS that will appear in For Your Information early in the new year. item 11 Betty Graf has distributed to EDS members a sample of bibliographic records for datafiles that are held by the Library. Bill suggested that members of EDS review these records for discussion at the next meeting 3. Additional Agenda None 4. CANSIM/EPAS Doug reported that he met recently with Andrea Chappell to discuss the mail-back routine. She will prepare a script that will provide for anonymous login, running CANSIM, and mailing back results. Hopefully patrons will create a minimum number of files for mailing back or else they will receive a great many mail messages. Doug also reported that the manuals for gopher and the Web are not yet updated. He has started a crib sheet to walk patrons through a simple start; he will consider putting this information on the gopher. 5. Census Albert reported there has been no change since the last meeting. The 17 tapes are still with Laine Ruus. Albert will encourage her to send these back to Carol a few at a time rather than sending them back in one batch. Albert also mentioned that he was recently notified of additional files to be ftp-ed, and this has now been done; the problems with Toronto's ftp server have now been resolved. Susan mentioned that she hasn't yet created the About pages. Bill reported that Charles Woods is looking into a logical structure for the data on library before this data is NFS mounted. There was discussion about whether we should have one top-level directory (e.g., EDS) or several top-level directories corresponding to the various datasets (e.g., 91census) 6. GSS Shabiran indicated that one of the GSS codebooks is still missing; Albert is looking into this. She also indicated that she intends to complete the About pages by tomorrow. Doug will look into the DocuTech service as a way to obtain hardcopies of the manuals and codebooks for which we do not already have paper copies. Albert reported that the GSS files are most likely not in their final location on library. Until this is done it is not possible to edit the stub files to include the data definition information, 7. Violence Against Women Study Albert indicated that the VAW files are probably not in the right location on library; he put them where space was available. As is the case with the GSS data, we must wait until Charles Woods has determined a logical structure before EDS members can begin to move datafiles into the appropriate directories. 8. Grand Opening After much discussion about how much work remains to be done, it was decided to postpone the grand opening until February 1.
