Minutes of Previous Meeting none 2. Business Arising 5 Debbie Tytko spoke to the Information Resource Processing process group about UWL-EDS, about who we are and what we are doing. They were already fairly aware of us. 3. Additional Agenda 8. Faculty Development Days 9. Data Request Form 4. Progress Report Several suggested changes had been incorporated into the progress report. Revised copies were distributed and briefly discussed. Any new comments must be in to Doug by Wed. June 19, at which point it will be amended, and posted to the web with paper copies to members and M.C. Shepherd. It was felt that, as long as this and subsequent reports were approximately annual, it need not be strictly based on the fiscal year. 5. CAPDU meeting report Susan Moskal reported that the CAPDU annual meeting found many other data services in a similar situation as us - looking at resource sharing and distributed computing, and facing organizational changes. Her report will be deposited with the Library office; some items of note: re DLI - procedures are being developed for dealing with requests from outside the university; such users could be assisted after paying StatsCan a fee and providing receipts. - requests from non-governmental organizations should be sent to StatsCan for vetting on an individual basis until they have enough information to develop a rule. - we must be vigilant to watch for students on work-terms obtaining data for employers. A discussion ensued about responsibility for data after it's out of our hands, It was suggested that we develop a small "readme" file that can accompany datasets that we distribute. - Ownership of data follows the general rule of thumb from StatsCan "If the data can be reverse engineered to show the original form then it is still owned by StatsCan" - The DLI agreement will be reviewed in the near future. Efforts to bring in other agencies will begin in year three. Phase 2 of DLI will focus on training. - Proposals for a national data archive were discussed. - Vince Grey of UWO is setting up a website for CAPDU and the eastern Canada ICPSR federation. - Susan Moskal demonstrated the StatsCan thematic search tool (helps find which datasets have what data). 6. IASSIST report deferred 7. TUG - DLI Data services at WLU, UW and UG are meeting to develop a common web page and investigate avenues of cooperation. Albert Kemp demonstrated the DLI web pages he has developed and a prototype order form. 8. TRACE Susan Moskal is looking for a faculty member who has used data in classroom assignments. 8. Data Request Forms Susan Moskal is developing some request forms to aid in tracking requests and keeping statistics.
