University of Waterloo Electronic Data Service Working Group Minutes for Meeting of October 9, 1996 Present: Albert Kemp Absent: Debbie Tytko Doug Morton Sue Moskal (Chair) Richard Pinnell Carol Vogt Shabiran Rahman(Secretary) 1. Minutes of Previous Meeting -July 17 Approved(?) 2. Add'l Agenda - Geo-spatial data, GSS 3. Business Arising- None 4. EDS Office Hours Hours changed to: Tuesdays 10.30am-12.30pm and Wednesdays 3.30pm-4.30pm Sue Moskal will get the information changed where required and inform the users through various sources e,g. the Gazette 4a. Geo-spatial data Business has been brisk. UMD Library staff now provide consultations Wednesdays and Thursdays. Users should consult the UMD library for hours 5. Moving Data and Verification The problems with regards to CNES84 were discussed. Problem with the data has been resolved. Carol Vogt will send an e-mail message to Dr John Wilson to reassure him and others, that steps were being taken to prevent similar problems in the future. Albert will keep Doug, Sue and Shabiran informed once the data has been brought down so they are aware of the progress as well as any problems encountered by the users Also when a dataset is requested, Doug, Sue and Shabiran will have the responsibility of determining the file size and ensuring that the user has the required server space before Albert brings down the data 6. Leisure Studies Data Bank How this data would be made available was discussed. One suggestion was that a list similar to the DCS list of data be placed on the the EDS homepage, and users request the data from that list. Richard would gather more information with regards to liscencing agreement and time involved in providing this service by the library 7. General Social Surveys GSS 9 and 10 are now available. After Albert has brought down the data, Shabiran will update the webpage 8. Delivery of Datasets via the web The possibility and implications of delivering datasets via the web was discussed briefly. It was suggested that an electronic form could could be set-up for users to order datasets and they could use anonymous ftp to access the data We need approval before we can go ahead with this project. Albert is preparing a project proposal for Mark Haslett. 9. Delivery of datasets received on cd-rom It would be worthwhile to have CANSIM and E-STAT cd-rom's networked.
