University of Waterloo Electronic Data Service Working Group Minutes for Meeting of October 23, 1996 D R A F T Present: Albert Kemp (Secretary) Absent: Shabiran Rahman Doug Morton Debbie Tytko Sue Moskal (Chair) Carol Vogt Richard Pinnell CC: Mark Haslett, Charles Woods 1. Minutes of Previous Meeting - Approved. 2. Add'l Agenda - Leisure Studies Database 3. Business Arising - During a recent meeting with the Mapping, Analysis and Design group, Richard Pinnell reported on geo-spatial as well as other dataset maintained by the UWL-EDS. He also mentioned our current plans for anonymous FTP delivery of such data to the rest of the UW community. M.A.D. was excited to hear about these things. It was also decided that all corresponding references to assistance on the UWELIB pages would be changed to point to the M.A.D. helpdesk, rather than an individual. 4. Leisure Studies Database - Richard Pinnell met recently with Roger Mannell, former Chair of Recreation & Leisure Studies, regarding our involvement in the acquisition/storage of LSDB data. Upon Roger's return from a conference in Kansas City, he will make some data available to us. It was tentatively agreed that the data would reside on the Attic system. Apparently, there are charges incurred with accessing data on Attic. The group will ask Carol Vogt to look into what these charges are, and how UWL-EDS would be billed for such access. Roger has also agreed to provide a machine-readable list of all available LSDB data files. 5. Dec. 5th Meeting: John Wilson - Sue Moskal spoke with John recently. His concerns involve the integrity of surveys and other important research data, currently being stored on tape. Sue assured John that these data are fine, and that the problem he experienced was the result of how the data was read from tape. However, the meeting will proceed as planned at 10:00 a.m., in the Davis Library conference room (DC1568). Additional agenda items may include discussion of other existing datasets on campus. 6. Faculty Representation - Jim Brox of the Economics Faculty has expressed an interest in assisting the UWL-EDS with making the CANSIM and E-STAT databases available campus-wide. This will be discussed further at a future meeting. 7. Data Release Form - Richard's copy of the Data Release Form, which has been proposed for use by the UWL-EDS, was reviewed by group members. Various suggestions for improvement were made. Sue will Sue will mention the form during her next meeting with Mark Haslett. It will then be discussed further at a future meeting. 8. CD-ROMs and Networking - The group agreed to pursue networking databases such as CANSIM, CANSIM Directory, and E-STAT. These are considered to be high-use databases and are therefore strong candidates for network access. 9. Future Agenda - Faculty Representation Data Release Form CD-ROMs & Networking Use Statistics FTP Data Delivery System Next Meeting: November 6, 1996, 1:30 p.m., Room 407 (Porter).
