- Minutes of the Meeting, September 3, 2003: Deferred until the next meeting.
- Follow-Up To EDS Advisory Committee Meeting (November 26, 2003)
There was discussion on issues that arose from the EDS Advisory Committee meeting. These included:
- Faculty notification of new data sets Based on comments made during the Advisory Committee meeting, the group concluded there needs to be improvement in the methods used to notify faculty of new data sets. It was suggested that liaison librarians could perhaps participate in this process. A list of new data sets listed on the TDR site under “What’s New” could be sent to the librarians monthly. Each liaison librarian could review the list to determine what might be of interest to their faculty. The group agreed this would be useful for both the librarians and faculty. Sandra offered to download the lists and distribute them (Shabiran is willing to share this task if Sandra is busy some month). Action: Shabiran will send out a message to all librarians notifying them that new lists will be sent out.
- Errors in new data sets. A member of the Advisory Committee made the suggestion that a panel of experts might be formed to review the data for accuracy. Action: Richard will take this to TDR and try to get some people who would be willing to scan new data sets in their field. :
- Greater Awareness of Data Links..The group agreed that more information should be added to the Data Links newsletter. The following suggestions were made:
- Add a banner “What is Data Links” to the top of the newsletter
- Add notice of where to get back issues
- Add more detail in the email message sent out; for example, include a table of contents in the message
- Increased publicity. The group discussed other ways to increase publicity and develop a greater awareness of EDS services and the data available. It was agreed that it would be beneficial to have a higher profile on the “News At your Library” web page.
- EDS WEBPAGES:
The group reviewed the changes Helen Yeuping He recently made to the EDS web pages The following suggestions were made.
- Remove the note “accessible to UW users only’ from the CANSIM heading (located under the Access to Data). CANSIM is on the TDR site but available to all.
- The link for “Statistics Canada” should go to the Statistics Canada home page.
- The link for “Southwestern Ontario Research Centre” should be followed by the acronym SWORDC
- Add a link for “What’s New”.
The group discussed where the link to the web board should be located on the EDS page. It was decided that a link to new data sets should be on the main page and the secondary page would have links to the web board and ICPSR.
Richard will send an update to Helen for the section under “Consortia”
The group agreed that aesthetic changes still need to be made to improve the general appearance of the page. Richard noted that Helen will investigate options for the background colour and determine how to update the title to make it stand out.
