As you know, renovations on the first floor of Porter continue. The next stage involves relocating some User Services staff into the space previously occupied by Special Collections staff and moving the micro-materials cabinets and equipment into the area previously occupied by the rare book stacks.

The movement of the micro-materials collection will free up space in the central area of the first floor. It would be ideal if we could use this area in a manner that would benefit our users, particularly since we are expecting an influx of even more students this fall. Traffic patterns, the location of the washrooms and the elevators complicate this. Time is also a concern.

The Porter First Floor Configuration Group, with representation from User Services, Facilities, and Special Collections, is now finalising plans on the movement of the micro-materials and User Services staffing space, and we do not want to delay this work. However, we do want to see if we can easily incorporate a plan that would allow us to make effective use of the central space. In order to address this, I have enlarged the Group by including Carl Nagel from Systems and an ISR representative. The Group will develop a proposal for use of the space that enables us to meet immediate needs and does not require structural changes that might inhibit flexibility for future uses. In consultation with Sharon Lamont, Susan Routliffe and Mark Haslett, I have asked Sharon to have the planning group consider explicitly the idea of using the space as an area with tables, comfortable chairs, and convenient network access which could be used by individuals or groups of students and faculty.

I hope that we will be able to have an enhanced and inviting space ready for the new students this September.
