Designing and Equipping a Teaching Space, Davis Library Project Plan
Context/Background: The Davis Renovation Planning team has recommended that funds received from the Kresge Challenge be used to furnish and equip a teaching space for librarians, students, and circulation trainers in the Davis Library. The space intended to house the teaching space was first identified as such in the major library renovation of 2004, when walls and doors for this space were constructed. In the meantime, the space has become a popular place for silent study, while staff found alternate teaching spaces or gave lectures instead of hands-on instruction. The Renovation Planning team has reconfirmed that Davis library staff still require a functional teaching space.
Purpose: develop the Silent Study room adjacent to the Research/information Desk into a teaching, meeting, and learning space for library staff and UW users. Chose appropriate furniture and equipment and ensure that networking, electrical and air handling services can support information literacy teaching and learning, staff training, library meetings, and silent studying.
Project Assumptions:
- Furniture should be equally useable for the purposes described above and easily reconfigured as needed
- Wireless internet access with enough electrical outlets to plug in laptops
- Space bookable by Library staff as 1 large space or 1 or 2 smaller spaces
- Environmental issues such as air circulation and temperature are resolved
- Consultation with library staff and students who will use and support the space
Members:
- Anne Fullerton and Melanie Watkins, Davis Renovation Planning team
- Carl Nagel, Systems
- Leeanne Romane, Librarian with teaching experience in a variety of spaces
- Mandy Wetherup, Circulation trainer
Administrative Contacts:
- Allan Bell, Associate University Librarian Information Technology Services
- Sharon Lamont, Director Organizational Services
Communication Plan:
- Share draft plans with Davis users and library staff
- Report draft plan(s) to Library Managers
- Final plan to Library Executive by end of April 2008
Approach/Timeline:
- Review existing reports and data. Convertible Space: Final report by SD348. Silent Study Room Comment Cards.
- Review existing materials about teaching spaces collected by the Davis Renovation Planning team. Make site visits to similar spaces on or off campus.
- Review environmental concerns such as need for soundproofing common wall with Reserves workroom and ongoing problems with air circulation
- Determine how flexible the space needs to be and the implications e.g. could tables be in a fixed configuration and still satisfy teaching, training, meeting and studying needs? Is it essential to have both 2 small rooms and 1 big large room? (Implications for a moveable wall vs. fixed wall)
- Explore moveable walls and soundproofing
- Explore how to provide adequate number of electrical outlets for laptops regardless of room use. Determine options and cost implications of complete flexibility vs. fixed tables.
- Identify issues related to systems support
- Choose a laptop charging cart suitable for the space and the number of laptops required which could be stored outside the space when not in use. Consider also Systems requirements for upgrading laptops remotely vs. work study student responsibility.
- Choose tables, chairs, podium or equivalent, storage space
- Choose overhead projectors and location, printers and other peripherals and how to project images on walls
- Work in conjunction with appropriate UW and/or outside consultants
