Transformational Leadership
(proposed 2007)

3.1 Library resources

This is a summary of the University of Waterloo (UW) Library resources in support of the proposed UW MA program in Transformational Leadership

The decision to purchase Library materials for this programme will be the responsibility of the Liaison Librarians for Drama and Speech Communications; Psychology; Environmental Studies; Political Science; and History and Faculty Library Representatives from each of these departments. Selection is guided by the collection policies and the approval plan subject profiles for each unit.

Library Holdings

Because UW Library’s collection policies for Drama and Speech Communications; Psychology; Environmental Studies; Political Science, and History currently touch on issues of leadership, we are already making available items of interest to researchers of transformational leadership (refer to section on Collection Evaluation)

Online Indexes, Abstracts, and Full Text Databases

As this is an interdisciplinary program, almost all of the indexes and abstracts in the social sciences and many in the sciences have some coverage of this subject area. A list of the online indexes and abstracts available to UW students and faculty is available at http://journal-indexes.uwaterloo.ca/display.cfm.

Indexes and abstracts that have extensive coverage of the subject of transformational leadership are:

When full text is not contained within a database itself, embedded links allow users to connect to electronic subscriptions when available or to the Library’s catalogue record for holdings and call number information.

Remote Access

The UW community may access online databases, e-journals, data sets, and e-books from off-campus via the Library’s proxy “Connect from Home” feature.

Collection Evaluation

Our holdings were checked against a substantial bibliography of references (pp.237-263) in the following book: Transformational Leadership. 2nd Edition/ by Bernard M. Bass and Ronald E. Riggio. Mahwah, N.J.: L. Erlbaum Associates, 2006.

This book is by an established scholar in the field of leadership studies. The updated edition is intended to serve as a “comprehensive review of theorizing and empirical research that can serve as a reference point and starting point for additional research on the theory” in the fields of study for the proposed MA program. The results of library holdings checks against this authoritative bibliography are as follows:

Total number of monographs cited in the bibliography = 180

Number of monographs held TUG wide = 133 (74% of the total)

Total number of periodicals cited in the bibliography = 105

Number of cited periodicals held TUG wide = 87 (82.9%)

Access to Off Campus Resources

Books and journal articles not owned by the UW Library but held by UG or WLU may be requested through TRELLIS. Books and copies of journal articles are delivered to faculty, staff and students within three working days. The cost is absorbed by the Library.

The Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery (ILL) service provides faculty, students, and staff with books, copies of journal articles, theses, and government documents from libraries within Canada and abroad. The UW Library uses RACER, the Ontario university-wide

interlibrary loan system. With minor exceptions, the cost for this service is absorbed by the Library.

Information Services

The Liaison Librarians are available for consultation with faculty and students. These librarians also work with faculty and staff to develop course integrated library instruction in the form of lectures, hands-on instruction, Web pages, or online courseware modules.

The UW Library also offers general orientation programs including tours, workshops on database searching and using the Web, and seminars for graduate students.

Financial Support

The current monograph budgets are able to support this programme. An additional increase of $5000 per year would be helpful in keeping up with new purchases.

Conclusion

We are confident the UW Library can provide the support for the Masters program in Transformational Leadership, both in holdings and in services. We would be happy to discuss the Library’s resources, services, and facilities in more detail if required.
