Report for the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies on Library resources for Management Sciences

April 2004

The following is a summary of University of Waterloo (UW) Library resources in support of the graduate program in Management Sciences at Waterloo, prepared by Douglas Morton, Liaison Librarian for Management Sciences.

Library Holdings

Material is collected to support teaching and research to the PhD level in Management Sciences with emphasis on:

The decision to purchase Library materials for Management Sciences is the responsibility of the liaison librarian in consultation with the Faculty Library Representative. Selection is guided by the Collection Development Policy and the Approval Plan subject profile for the department.

The UW Library collection includes 157 current electronic serials, 47 current (print) serials, and over 15,250 monographs in subject areas of interest to Management Sciences. The collections held by the TriUniversity Group of Libraries (TUG) include 144 current serials and over 38,125 monographs in subject areas of interest to Management Sciences. The Management Sciences library fund supports the cost of 22 current print serials.

Management Sciences is a diverse group and makes use of many different areas of the library’s collection. The UW Library has 107,000 monographs in the business, economics & management areas (235,700 in TUG) and nearly 102,000 monographs in engineering areas (154,600 TUG-wide). Similarly, there are 356 print journals (1055 TUG-wide), 785 ejournals in business, economics & management and 387 print journals (646 TUG-wide) and 867 ejournals in engineering.

Access to On-Campus Resources

The University of Waterloo Library 's collections in Management Sciences are housed primarily in the Davis Centre Library however large amounts of supporting material purchased in support of Accountancy and Economics are in the Dana Porter Library. Access to the entire Library collection as well as materials held by our TUG partners is through the online catalogue TRELLIS, which is available via the UW electronic Library on the World Wide Web (WWW).

The Library's automated circulation system allows users to charge out materials during the hours that the Library is open and to renew items online.

Currently the Library is testing a service to deliver copies of journal articles to faculty and graduate students on campus.

With the exception of the current issues of journals, and reference materials, most materials circulate. Graduate students and faculty may borrow most monographs for the term.

Computer Databases

The Library subscribes to a number of electronic databases, most of which are internet accessible and some are available within the library on a CD-ROM network. The following are some of the databases of interest to Management Sciences:

 ABI/Inform (Business, Economics, Management)
Compendex Plus (all branches of engineering)
INSPEC (physics, electrical engineering, computer and control engineering)
MathSCI (mathematics)
Web of Science (all subjects, special feature is cited reference searching)

Access To Off-Campus Resources

Books and journal articles not owned by the UW Library but held by the University of Guelph or Wilfrid Laurier University may be requested through TRELLIS, the union catalogue of the TriUniversity Group of Libraries. Books and photocopied journal articles are delivered to UW faculty and students within three working days; the cost is absorbed by the Library.

The Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery service provides members of the UW academic community with books, journal articles (photocopies), theses, and government documents from libraries (other than TUG) within Canada and abroad. Access to materials in Ontario libraries is enhanced by Ariel software for electronic delivery. Borrowing access to library materials held by Ontario university libraries is facilitated by RACER, the interlibrary loan system used by OCUL members: racer.scholarsportal.info/vdx/index.html.

CISTI Source is a current awareness and document delivery service from CISTI (Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information) providing citations to over 14,000 journals in all subject areas. The Library absorbs the cost of delivering copies of journal articles to UW faculty and graduate students.

UW faculty, staff and students, with some exceptions, may borrow in person from university libraries in Ontario , Quebec , and the four western provinces under various reciprocal borrowing agreements: http://www.coppul.ca/rb/rbindex.html.

Access to Internet Resources and UW Electronic Library

The Library has developed a web-based information system that organizes and provides access to Internet resources, some freely available to anyone and others, funded by the library, which are restricted to UW faculty and students. These resources include, for example, research guides arranged by academic discipline, catalogues of libraries around the world, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and style guides. The UW Electronic Library homepage can be accessed through the URL http ://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca . It includes a webpage for Management Sciences developed by the liaison librarian.

Also available to members of the UW academic community are the data holdings of TUG’s TriUniversity Data Resources: tdr.tug-libraries.on.ca/. This data service provides Web access to the Canadian census, Statistics Canada surveys (e.g., Canadian Travel Survey), and the data holdings of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) in Ann Arbor , Michigan .

Information Services

Reference assistance is available in person or by telephone at the Library's Information Desks which are staffed by professional librarians and specially trained library assistants. Alternatively UW students and faculty may choose to use the Library’s Chat Reference service or e-mail messaging options provided through the Ask a Librarian service: www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/asklib/, useful if a personal visit to the Library is not convenient.

The liaison librarian for Management Sciences is available for consultation with individuals or small groups of students as well as course related instruction about library research and tools. The Library also offers orientation programs including tours, workshops on database searching and using the World Wide Web, and seminars for graduate students.

Financial Support

During the past seven years, the Library has spent approximately $153,479 on materials for Management Sciences. In 2002/03 $5,707 was spent for current serials and $6,301 for books. Please see table 1 for details. Electronic databases and full text ejournals are purchased from general funds. It should be noted that materials acquired for other departments as well as reference material, which includes indexes and abstracts, both print and electronic, are also of interest to Management Sciences.

Conclusion

More detailed information including lists of serials purchased for Management Sciences, serial titles of interest to Management Sciences, number of monograph titles of interest to Management Sciences, and a description of the UW Electronic Library are available in the Library. We would be pleased to discuss the Library's holdings and services with an appraiser at the time of a campus visit. We believe that a high level of support for the graduate program in Management Sciences has been provided by the Library, both in holdings and in services.
