The following is a summary of University of Waterloo (UW) Library resources in support of the graduate program in Philosophy, prepared by Christine Jewell, Liaison Librarian for Philosophy.
Material is collected to support teaching and research to the Ph.D. level in Philosophy with emphasis on these areas:
The decision to purchase Library materials for Philosophy is the responsibility of the Liaison Librarian in consultation with the Faculty Library Representative. Selection is guided by the Collection Development Policy and the Approval Plan Subject Profile for the department.
The collection includes some 56,772 monographs relevant to Philosophy. There are 128 current print serials purchased for Philosophy and 199 current print serials in subject areas of interest to Philosophy researchers. The library provides access to over 6,600 Web-based journals of which 99 are grouped under the philosophy subject heading. The library also provides Web access to 10 databases of primary texts in Philosophy.
The University of Waterloo’s collections in Philosophy are housed in the Dana Porter Library. Access to the entire Library collection is through the catalogue, TRELLIS. This Web-based catalogue is available via public workstations in the library and remotely.
The Library’s automated circulation system allows users to charge out materials during the hours that the Library is open and to renew items remotely from a web-based patron record. With the exception of the current issues of journals and reference materials, most materials circulate. Graduate students and faculty may borrow most monographs for the term.
Electronic Databases
The following databases relevant to Philosophy are licensed for use by members of the University of Waterloo community. The databases are available remotely as well as on-site:
Books and journal articles from the University of Guelph and Wilfrid Laurier University may be identified and requested through TRELLIS, the unified catalogue that indexes all library materials in the TriUniversity Group of Libraries (TUG). Items are delivered to UW from any TUG library in 1-2 working days.
UW's Interlibrary Loan/ Document Delivery Service obtains books, journal articles, patents, theses, etc. from institutions in Canada and abroad on behalf of UW faculty and students. Journal articles from Ontario libraries are delivered quickly through the Internet using Ariel software. Currently the Library absorbs all costs except for the purchase of theses, reports, patents, and standards.
Faculty and graduate students may borrow directly from university libraries in Ontario, Quebec and the western provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia) under direct borrowing agreements.
The Library has developed a web-based information system that organizes and provides access to Internet resources by discipline as well as resources such as library catalogues from around the world and electronic texts and journals. The UW Library homepage can be accessed through the URL http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/. It includes a web page for Philosophy developed by the Liaison Librarian.
Reference assistance is available in person or by telephone. Information desks are staffed by professional librarians and specially trained library assistants 60 hours a week during the fall and winter terms (including evenings Monday to Thursday until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoons 1:00 – 5:00) and 40 hours a week in the spring term. The Library also offers an electronic reference service, “Ask Us/Tell Us” (http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/comments/), which is accessible to UW students and faculty with access to the Internet.
The Liaison Librarian for Philosophy, Christine Jewell, has a Master’s Degree in Philosophy. She is available for consultation with individuals or small groups of students as well as course-related instruction about library research strategies and tools. The Library also offers orientation programs including tours, seminars for graduate students, and workshops on topics including database searching and the World Wide Web resources.
During the past seven years, the Library has spent approximately $505,300 directly on materials for Philosophy (for details, see table below). Electronic databases and full-text journals are acquired from a general fund. Materials acquired for other departments such as Classical Studies, Pure Mathematics, English, History, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, and Sociology also support graduate study in Philosophy.
More detailed information including lists of serials purchased for Philosophy, serial titles of interest to Philosophy researchers, and a description of the UW Library are available in the Library. We would be pleased to discuss the Library’s holdings and services with an appraiser at the time of a campus visit. We believe that the Library, both in holdings and in services, has provided a high level of support for the graduate program in Philosophy.
