This meeting was set up to discuss a number of issues initially dealt with in IRMC and to provided suggestions to questions raised in March by Chris Gray on how multimedia CDROMs should be made accessible to our patrons. The questions originally taken up by IRMC have been passed on to ISMC to deal with.

The initial questions were as follows:

  1. Should the multimedia CDs be housed in Porter Controlled Access?
  2. Should the CDs be allowed to circulate as well as be available for in-Library use?
  3. For in-Library use, should the software be installed on the Hollinger workstations?
  4. Is "yes" to 3, should the software be installed on all 6 workstations?
  5. What type of headphones should we go with? Do we accept the infrastructure’s recommendation?

At our meeting it has been suggested that Library owned multimedia CD’s should be housed in the Controlled Access area of the appropriate library as was felt initially by IRMC. All of the CD’s are to be used in-house only and the software installed on all Hollinger workstations. There were concerns regarding the cost of replacement if a CD was lost or damaged should the material be allowed to circulate.

It was also suggested that the headphones be housed in the Controlled Access Areas as well, since it was thought that headphones that were hardwired might lead to use by patrons for purposes other than that for which they were intended. The Infrastructure Process Group had suggested using the headphones that were purchased for the Hollinger workstations and ISMC concurs.

There were a few questions brought up at the meeting for which we require further information.

  1. Could a box be set up next to the workstation that would allow the user to plug headphones directly into the box, since there may be instances where the headphones might have to be plugged into the back of the machine rather than at the front?
  2. Can Systems do a Burner Backup if CD’s are allowed to circulate? Susan Moskal will check with Chris regarding these issues.

Doug offered to consult some literature/newsgroups on how CD’s are accessed elsewhere to gain further insight into how others might be dealing with this issue.
