- Roving Reference Pilot Project
The group identified and discussed the concerns and suggestions expressed
at the ISR meeting on October 6th during the review of the roving
pilot project. We also reviewed a summary of a survey that included 17 other
libraries’ experiences with reference roving. We all agreed to move forward
with the pilot, as we believe that the anticipated benefits for our students
suggest it is worthwhile to continue.
One of the suggestions at the ISR meeting was to advertise the new roving
service. We decided that it will be more appropriate to begin advertising
for the official start of the roving service in January 2001, rather than
for the pilot project.
Another suggestion presented at the ISR meeting was to provide the rovers
with a handheld personal organizer. We felt that this would be too complicated
for the roving service at the moment as it will require training and the
purchase of equipment.
At the next ISR meeting on October 20th, ISMC will review the
details of the roving service once more before the pilot begins and will
discuss the roving statistics form.
Evaluation of the pilot project was then discussed. Components of the
systematic evaluation of the pilot project will include the following:
- A revised statistics form. A draft has been created and will be tested
by several ISMC members before the next ISMC meeting.
- A questionnaire for students will be created ideally for the beginning
of the pilot project. Shabiran will start on this and will consider what
questions to ask, how to distribute the questionnaire and will obtain
approval through the "Office of Research".
- A questionnaire for library staff involved in the roving project will
be created and distributed after the completion of the pilot project.
- A meeting with ISR will be held at the end of the pilot project to discuss
experiences and suggestions concerning the roving service.
- Systems/ISR Relationship
Because of time considerations, this topic was delayed until a further ISMC
meeting
