  1. Minutes of Previous Meeting [Oct.10,2000]
  2. Approved.

  3. Roving Reference Pilot Project
  4. After some initial testing by some committee members of the proposed statistics form to be used for the reference roving pilot a few changes were made based on some of their observations while testing the form.

Jackie, Maureen and Shabiran have agreed to spend some time developing questions for a staff evaluation form before the next meeting. Mary Stanley who could not attend todays meeting will be asked if she might like to be involved in this as well. The proposed questionnaire will be discussed at the next ISMC meeting to be held Oct.24.

It was decided as well that we would postpone a student questionnaire for the moment since this is actually just a pilot project at present and because we do not have time to properly develop and test a survey before the pilot begins.

  5. Report –Preparation for Lap Tops Committee
  6. Jackie went over a preliminary report the docking stations sub-group prepared for presentation to ISMC. Outlined were recommendations for additional drops and suggested locations for these drops as well as cost estimates for the recommended drops for both the Davis & Porter libraries. There were no new drops recommended at this time for UMD. As well Jackie relayed information on other considerations such as services that would be available through the ports as well as who would be eligible to access the ports along with any technical requirements. The sub-group has recommended 14 new drops for Porter totalling 29 drops and 8 new drops for Davis totalling 23 drops.

There was some concern regarding the number of drops located in study rooms and it was felt that study rooms could be tied up if areas where drops are presently located became busy. It was suggested that additional drops be included for floors 6-10 in Porter and in the study carrels area in Davis. The sub-group will look into this further.

Concerns were also raised regarding the statement within the recommendations to ‘locate drops close to Library Staff for help and support’. The report will be modified so that it is clear that staff are not expected to provide assistance with technical or hardware problems specific to an individual laptop.

Doug had information from the Queens University library who had initiated this service and relayed some of their early experiences in implementation. Two examples cited were that we should not get ‘hung-up’ on security hardware and that there may be a number of problems when initially implemented with students experiencing connection problems.

The report will be revised to reflect recommendations for further drops and cost information and then will be presented to Mark Haslett.
