Minutes of the Meeting of April 17, 2001

1. Minutes of Previous Meeting

   The minutes of the April 3, 2001 meeting were approved with one change.

2. Report from the Ad Hoc Publications Committee

The Committee reviewed the report it received from the Ad Hoc Publications Committee regarding the conversion of the How To and Titles series from PDF to HTML. ISMC agreed with the recommendations the Ad Hoc Publications Committee made, with the following exceptions:

Converting from two series to one series:

• Numbers for the new series should contain hyphens instead of decimals.
• The Subject Access page should not be discontinued at this time.
• The sample subject categories page needs further review. (Perhaps a further breakdown of the categories on existing Web pages needs to be made.) ISMC will form a sub-group to look at the categories. Sue Moskal volunteered to be a member.
• Clarification is needed on "standardization of the publication titles" in section 2. (The author of the publication should be involved in this decision.)
• The date should be included in the footer information as described in section 3. (Note: ISMC will earmark the issue of e-mail addresses appearing in footers for future discussion.)
• Clarification is needed on the last statement of section 3 regarding the completion time for the initial edit.
• Section 6 requires clarification.

Time frames:


• What is does "entire conversion" mean? (What is included?)

Some technical & other details:


• Regarding the last point, ISMC recommends retaining the name of the original compiler, and adding the name of the librarian currently responsible for the publication.

Susan R. will forward the above points to the Ad Hoc Publications Committee. ISMC will determine the next step after modifications to the report have been made. The full report will remain on ISMC's Web page, but it will consider sending a less detailed report to those who create Library publications.

3. Web Statistics

   Prompted by Chris Gray's e-mail from the Library's Web Operational Management Group, the Committee felt it was time to consider Web statistics from an information services point of view. Statistics could be used to determine whether pages needed updating, culling or modifying (i.e. design or language). It would be also useful knowing if the number of hits a page receives is due to things such as library instructional sessions. It was suggested that ISMC work with Systems to determine which pages should be targeted.

   ISMC felt that the following types of statistics would be useful:
   

   • the number of hits a Web page receives
   • the amount of time users spend on a page
   • the path users take to get to a page, and where they go from there
   • where users are from (in library, on or off campus, proxy server)

   Susan R. will send a message to the Web Operational Management Group about ISMC's discussion on the above points.

4. Date for Meeting with Liaison Librarians on Information Literacy

   The Committee suggested that this meeting take place on May 11. Susan R. will send a preliminary message to the liaison librarians.
