Minutes of the Meeting of February 27, 2001

1. Approval of Minutes of Previous Meeting

The minutes of the February 6, 2001 meeting were approved with changes via e-mail and distributed to Library staff prior to today's meeting.

2. Business Arising from January 29, 2001 Minutes

Section 2 of the minutes state that Datalinks was to be available in electronic format only, and in PDF. Susan R. confirmed at today's meeting that it will be available in both PDF and HTML.

3. Information Literacy: Sophie Bury

Susan R. invited Sophie Bury, who is a Reference/Special Projects librarian at WLU, to attend ISMC's meeting today to explain how WLU has been addressing the ACRL standards. Sophie is a member of the Information Literacy Task Force, established at WLU in April 2000. Background on WLU's information literacy initiatives can be found at: http://www.wlu.ca/wwwlib/infolit/ Sophie outlined some of the activities that have taken place at WLU as follows:

• Information was gathered from Canadian and American libraries with respect to their approach to information literacy.
• Departments across campus were informed about information literacy initiatives.
• Faculties were surveyed to assess interest in course-integrated library instruction.
• The curriculum was reviewed for courses appropriate for course-integrated library instruction.
• A report was produced in Fall 2000 proposing how information literacy courses would be introduced.

Sophie said the Task Force is now preparing to implement the report. It is continuing to collaborate with faculty in developing various modules, which will be tested in April. The objective is to have a web-based tutorial working by Fall 2001.

ISMC and Sophie discussed the process in further detail and some of the concerns associated with the project. The Committee then thanked Sophie for speaking with ISMC.

4. Information Literacy and ISMC

   Shabiran updated ISMC on her meeting with Psychology, which expressed interest in the ACRL standards. She plans to meet with the department again about applying for a grant, which would be used for developing a course.

   The Committee considered where it should go next with the ACRL standards. Shabiran agreed to contact Don Wilson at Laurentian, and Erin will call Jane Luyben at Trent. ISMC will identify the steps it should take at its next meeting.
