1. Approval of Minutes of Previous Meeting

The minutes of the February 27, 2001 meeting were accepted.

2. Information Literacy

Susan R. distributed three documents from Sophie Bury of WLU. ISMC members will review them in preparation for its next meeting.

Today's discussion included the following items:

• What is the Committee aiming for?

The goal is full integration of information literacy across the curriculum.
• When should ISMC broaden its discussion? How? To whom?

Although the Committee has not yet formulated a plan, it acknowledged that it needs to engage liaison librarians in discussion before too long. Susan R. will prepare a statement on behalf of the Committee about its discussion regarding information literacy, and point to the ACRL standards on the staff web.
• How does UW faculty view information literacy?

Dr. Skidmore of the Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures Department was a member of the Information Literacy Task Force at WLU, and includes information literacy as part of his course, German 292. Shabiran will invite him to attend ISMC's next meeting on March 27. The Committee is interested in what he thinks information literacy is, what he is doing to promote IL, and how he sees the Library's role. A suggestion was made to view other course web pages as well.

Catherine Schryer of the English Department may provide another perspective. Erin will speak with her about talking to ISMC.

• How are UW librarians addressing ACRL's information literacy standards?

There was a consensus that the standards would improve what is being done already. Library instruction assignments could be compared to the standards to see whether they were being addressed.
• Who else could assist ISMC in better understanding the standards?

Susan R. will contact ACRL about the possibility of inviting someone there who is involved with the standards to present a workshop for librarians.
