1. Minutes of Previous Meeting

   The minutes of the April 17, 2001 meeting were approved with one change.

2. Report from the Ad Hoc Publications Committee

Mary reviewed the discussion that she and Susan R. had with Esther about the Ad Hoc Publications Committee Report. The report will be amended where appropriate to reflect the following:

• standardization of titles (section 2): "Simplify" will replace "standardization." The creator of the publication will also review the new title .
• date in the footer (section 3): Esther confirmed that the date will be included.
• initial edit (section 3): Esther will do the initial formatting edit of the publication, to ensure certain elements appear consistently.
• converting files from PDF into HTML (section 6): Esther will include the word "all."
• entire conversion (Time Frames): "Entire conversion" refers to the entire project, rather than just converting the files.
• retaining the name of the original compiler (final section): The Committee suggested that the names of the original compiler and the librarian currently updating the publication be listed. The date will reflect when the publication was last updated.

ISMC re-examined the need for the Subject Access page. The Search feature on the Library's home page would readily identify the subject in the title and content of a publication (once it is in HTML), and if librarians include a publication on their discipline page, people could access it there as well. The Committee suggested that the Subject Access page be discontinued, but not destroyed.

Numbering the new series, breaking the Interdisciplinary section into sub-categories, and monitoring out-of-date publications remain to be resolved. Sue Moskal will work with the Ad Hoc Publications Committee on these issues.

3. Information Literacy Standards

   Susan R. indicated that Jo Ann Carr from the University of Wisconsin-Madison is willing to present a day-long workshop on information literacy for UW librarians, probably in the fall. The Committee agreed on the following:

   • that the workshop is a good idea
   • that getting input from others outside the library would be useful
   • that the purpose of it should be defined before involving faculty and UW administration (What portion of the workshop should be set aside for faculty?)
   • that the workshop should include UW only
   • that the timing of the workshop be considered in terms of orientation and library instruction schedules.

   Susan R. will discuss possible dates with Jo Ann before the Committee's meeting with librarians on May 11.

   Comments were made by those who did an analysis of the standards and their library instruction courses, which are summarized as follows:

   • It is difficult to incorporate some of the standards (e.g. 3, 4, and 5) when the time of the session is too short.
   • The information literacy skills of the students are not known before the session is given.
   • It is difficult to get measurable outcomes from professors or teaching assistants.
   • Faculty members rated students' bibliographies differently, and it is difficult to access this kind of information.

   The discussion moved to the information literacy meeting on May 11. Susan R. will request that Facilities arrange the chairs in the Davis conference room. ISMC is welcome to attend, but it is not compulsory. Linda Teather will take notes. It was decided to open the meeting to Library Instruction Committee members. Margaret will forward to LINC the message that Susan R. sent to the librarians about the meeting. The discussion will be kept as general as possible. It was suggested that a forum be instituted after the upcoming meeting to provide opportunities for comments or questions about information literacy. Erin will talk to Marina about whether a webboard could be an option.
