- Minutes of Previous Meeting
The minutes of the meeting of October 8, 2002 were approved with changes.
- Review of Terms of Reference for the Library Instruction Committee
- Review the latest draft of the terms: ISMC reviewed the latest draft
of the terms prepared by Margaret, Helena, and Melanie. Comments and suggestions
include the following:
- Include a broad statement in the introductory section that reflects what the Library tries to achieve for UW students and
faculty, and then move more specifically into what LINC does.
- Incorporate a reference to meeting information literacy needs in the preamble.
- Indicate that LINC’s involvement in promotional activities pertain to the promotional aspects of instructional activities.
- Term #1 was felt to be too broad—refer to needs as those that might be met with non-discipline specific programs.
- Rather than stating that LINC designs the programs and services in #3, say that the committee ensures the development of the programs
and services. The reference to preparing teaching support materials should appear in a second sentence.
- The print and web publications developed by LINC referred to in #5 include displays, such as the Library kiosk.
- Specify in #8 that LINC evaluates the effectiveness of general library instruction programs.
- Clarify in #10 that the annual report submitted by LINC includes activity data required for external reports.
- Under Membership, state that the changeover in membership takes place in the spring, in order to facilitate the development
of the fall program.
- Indicate that ensuring continuity within LINC’s membership is important.
Margaret, Helena, and Melanie will update the revised draft of the terms of reference, and send it to ISMC.
- Consider when and how to involve all of ISR, and perhaps others,
in a discussion about whether we need to continue offering some of our
long-standing programs, e.g., tours: Margaret will bring this topic
to a future ISR meeting, and will encourage LINC members to attend. The
discussion will be open-ended, but will include the revised terms of reference
for LINC, and the direction that LINC should be going with respect to
instruction programs.
The discussion turned to Graham Hill’s University of Waterloo Library:
External Report, and to the comments and recommendations he made in connection
with library instruction at UW. ISMC noted the importance of identifying
user needs and “point of need” assistance. It was felt that there wasn’t
anything in the report that wasn’t discussed in LINC’s terms of reference
or in other forums.
ISMC thanked Margaret for participating in its review of the terms of reference
for the Library Instruction Committee. ISMC may decide to revisit this topic
after it is explored at the Information Services and Resources meeting.
Next Meeting: October 29 at Porter. Topic for discussion: review of
reference service.
