Minutes of Previous Meeting
The minutes of the meeting of October 7, 2003 were approved with changes.
Reference Philosophy
The Committee reviewed the latest draft of the reference philosophy statement that Jim prepared, and decided what should be done with it next. The guiding principles will be refined further, by perhaps combining the points that logically go together. Committee members were asked to give further thought to what is meant by “accuracy of information” and wording that would better reflect what we’re trying to get at.
ISMC will share the final draft with those who provide reference service for comment. It was felt that Special Collections, UMD and Optometry could choose how and when to review it once it is finalized. The Committee will send the statement to ISR in advance of a departmental meeting for discussion and input.
Components of Current Service
Judy reviewed the information she compiled as part of the task “Document
components of current service” as listed on the work breakdown structure:
service locations; delivery methods; hours; staffing models; number of staff,
and categories of statistics collected.
It was suggested to add EDS to the special client group category. Committee
members will send any further suggestions to Judy. How to present this information
will be considered after we see the results of the focus group discussions about
reference service. The data that Judy pulled together will be useful as it represents
a snapshot of the Library’s current reference service. The Committee thanked
Judy for her work.
Business Arising
Linda reported on the status of EZProxy. There have been no outages since the installation of new software and the 24/7 email alert system in September. Systems is very confident that no additional measures would be required.
Next Meeting: November 18, 2003 at Davis. Topics: issues related to the Library’s website; reference service philosophy statement; issues related to the reporting of reference statistics.
