Subject: Review of the Libary's Public Workstation & Network Environment
A project team has recently been appointed to review the requirements for
public workstations in the UW libraries in light of anticipated changes in library
services, user needs, and the Library and campus computing environments. The review
includes:
- seeking input from Library staff
- defining the purpose and functionality of the public workstations
- identifying user needs and changes required to meet those needs
- estimating the impact of these changes
- developing and assessing prototype workstations
- identifying the resources required and outlining implementation options
for action on the recommended changes
- submitting a report, with recommendations, by the end of September 2002.
The project charter for the review has been added to the ISMC web pages on the

Members of the review team are:

- Jackie Stapleton (Davis ISR)
- Alex McCulloch (User Services)
- Stephen Markan (IST)
- Carl Nagel (Systems)
- Bill Oldfield (Systems)
- Linda Teather (Facilitator/Systems/ISMC)
The first meeting of the review team was held last week and the first task
we identified was to compile information about patrons' needs from Library
staff who assist them at the public workstations. Sue, Jackie and Alex are seeking
input from staff in their departments and we know others will have useful input
for us too.
How can you assist us get the review under way?
If you've heard comments from patrons, or have suggestions based on your
own experience, about how the functionality of the workstations should be improved,
