- Approval of Minutes of Previous Meeting
Minutes were approved.
- Business Arising
Rearranging of ISR and Library Office space. Susan Routliffe is waiting for
Sharon Lamont to return from vacation to discuss the rearranging of ISR and
Library Office furniture etc., and then the move can go ahead.
- Additional Agenda
Public Printer.
Discussion followed regarding problems we have been encountering with the
public printer. Jennifer Haas will follow up to see if the new printer could
be installed before the end of September.
- New Faculty Orientation and Amazing Race
Proposed agenda for Mark Haslett’s talk. Forward any comments or concerns
to Shabiran Rahman. People were encouraged to come to part, or all of the
session.
Shabiran Rahman is looking into the details. Jennifer Haas suggested that
if anyone has anything to add to please get in touch with her.
Jim Parrott suggested that it would be useful if there would be a place for
Librarians business cards to be displayed.
It was also suggested that there be list of things that will be contained
in the package to be handed out. Cheryl Kieswetter is the person who would
know what the package contains and what other groups would be contributing.
A Civil Engineering grad student was sent by his department to raise the
question at the Information Desk regarding an information package of the
Davis Library. Doug Morton will be making up a package especially for them.
Shabiran Rahman would like a rough count on how many librarians will be attending
the session so she can arrange for name tags etc.
New faculty as well as any who missed last years session are invited to this
years session. It is usually well attended.
Davis Library is one of the destinations (Sept. 7,10:30 -11:30 a.m.) of this “Amazing
Race”.
It was suggested that maybe we have a “Welcome new Faculty and Students” sign.
Jennifer Haas will send out a list of new faculty.
The Information Desk will be covered for September 8. Anyone who wishes to
go to this session should see Jon Morgan to make sure that he has a replacement
for their shift.
The question was raised as to who is to be Larry Helfand’s replacement
to sit on the Information Desk every Friday. Jennifer Haas will look into
this.
- Reference Collection Weeding – how are we doing? Have we
met our goal? – Anne Fullerton
We still need to clear 30 individual shelves in our Reference area. The “TP’s” need
to be weeded. We will end up with “3 shelf high shelves” (lower
shelves with 3 sections high) where the tall shelves are now. Our tall shelves
will be cut down to our specifications.
Discussion ensued.
Send any lists to Anne Naese to proceed with deletes, discards etc.
Plans are underway for a glass wall to go between cement columns. The 3rd
week in September is the hopeful date for completion of carpeting, carrels
and electrical work.
Anne Fullerton reviewed the plans for the Silent Study renovation. She is
meeting with the electricians, Plant Ops etc. on Monday August 15.
Carol Stephenson broached the subject of a “Quick Reference” shelf
behind the Information Desk with possibly a shelf and chairs. Carol will
make a list of publications that would be useful to house there.
Laura Briggs asked for volunteers to help her finish weeding the Reference
area.
- Use the Library Responsibly Signage
Anne Fullerton had two different signs and 2 different locations as options.
A decision has to be made as to which to use, and a more permanent way must
be decided upon.
Opinions were solicited. Signs would be vinyl letters on plexi glass. The
middle of next week is the cut off date for adjustments to wording etc. Options
as to signage for the lounge was discussed as well.
Anne Fullerton has examples in catalogues. Connie Pantic will get in touch
with Annette Dandyk in regards to the supplies budget and how much is available
to us for this.
- Laptops
Shabiran Rahman was able to purchase 10 laptops for librarians to use for
instructional purposes. These were purchased with money left over from the
4th floor renovations. These laptops can be booked online via Val Huggan.
More information is forthcoming, as details are still to be worked out.
The Systems Department also has 10 laptops available for projects. You can
call the Help Desk to book them.
- Microsoft Office on the Public Workstation
Jennifer Haas asked if selectors want Microsoft Office to be available on
all public workstations or just some? A discussion ensued – some selectors
wanted it on all machines, others did not. No decision as yet. It was suggested
that a decision should be made after a survey is completed. This must however
be made by Fall so Systems can install Microsoft Office.
- Webpage for Davis Library Facilities
This came up because of student queries if the Library is wireless. Systems
Design students were involved in planning a webpage in the past. A discussion
evolved as to what sorts of things would be put on the webpage. It was suggested
that Kevin Manuel work on our page for September. Circulation does have a
manual with lots of information for facilities etc. Jennifer Haas will speak
to Shabiran Rahman regarding this.
- Around the Table
Two new electronic Chemical Resources are available. Laura Briggs will send
around information regarding this. The new edition of “Sci Finder Scholar” is
available. Laura Briggs will have “time out” cut in half to 10
minutes.
Carol Stephenson informed that Jackie Stapleton is now selector for Kinesiology.
Carol Stephenson is doing Optometry and Health Studies.
Wish Leonard is uploading the e-journals list. Chris Gray is entering set
time periods. Wish will update the list in January and August.
Jim Parrott acknowledged his gratefulness to Jennifer Haas for taking over
duties of Head of Davis ISR.
Connie Pantic asked people to put cover sheets from their printing in the
tray provided. It will be put out by the public printer for student use.
Hopefully this will cut down on theft of printer paper. This suggestion came
from Jennifer Haas as tried and true solution to paper theft at Texas.
Sasa Mrsa reported that serial changes should be done by the beginning of
September. He should then be ready to start on Porters.
Jennifer Haas asked who uses “Book It”. Carol Stephenson mentioned
that Optometry uses it and the benefits to it. Jennifer will be going to
a Book It orientation course, anyone interested is encouraged to join her.
