E-mailed Committee/Project/Other Activity Updates
From Doug:
Because we ran out of time in this morning's abbreviated meeting, here are a bunch of one-liners covering my current activities.
IRMC:
At our recent meeting we're working on:
- LAU is looking at whether an ordering procedure using Blackwell's Collection manager might be used here or more work than it's worth.
- Donation procedures - covering some of the things Jackie mentioned plus a new donor form and tighter guidelines on duplicates and accepting "off-topic" material.
- We are once again looking at weeding the collection, starting with duplicate monographs with low use. (I expect Porter to be affected by this more than Davis)
- It is time to review our approval profiles; many of the Blackwell profiles have not bee updated for many years. The concern about the low price threshold for Davis material is noted and is being investigated as part of this.
SFX
- Efforts are underway to identify ways to finish activating targets in the knowledgebase. Following that will be a review to see if we can rationalize and streamline processing of ejournals in three (3) databases (Trellis, ERM & SFX)
Article Indexes
- As announced earlier this week, alternate access has been identified and added to databases that have this.
Chat Reference
The implementation group met recently and will be
- renaming the group as Chat Reference Operational Group
- testing pushing pages / escorting so that it can be used when needed
- looking at expanding service hours
- expanding our membership
From Anne:
Hi – theses are items I was going to mention Friday. Please ask me any questions -
DC Library Spaces
1. Warranty on Davis Renovations expires soon – Walter Fedy did a walk through on Friday to ID any deficiencies. Lighting specific ones are the major issues. (Fancy entrance aisle and lounge lights and burn out bulbs very fast. Light in front of Info Desk hasn’t been on for ages; pot light at Info Desk comes on 10 min after the other lights; lower wattage of lights at Circ. desk.) Walter Fedy is investigating; chipped paint on the stair rails near bottom (both stairs); painted edge on attendant’s desk is bashed up; Info Desk posts still floating over the carpet; window frame paint in Reserves workroom is unfinished. Anyone have any other observations?
2. Davis Library building program – Sharon has asked me to put a group together to document Davis library plans in a building program in case money suddenly appears. Plans could include staff areas and an addition to Davis. If anyone from Davis ISR is interested, let me know.
3. Laptop Lending – we included this in the original DC reno plans and it is listed as a service to be implemented at UW in the future in the annual CARL reports. We need to clarify what the service could be and if we still want one. Anyone interested in working on this, let me know. I have collected info on these services.
4. Davis FlexLab – Mary is actively soliciting money for this project. We need to be looking at furniture options etc. so we can move ahead when $$ is available. $300,000. I believe.
ALA Science and Technology Program 2006 – New Orleans. – I am on this committee and will attend Midwinter meetings (Jan 20–25, 2006). Library Trade Show is extensive so if you want me to pick up vendor brochures, let me know which vendors. Annual is still in New Orleans as far as I know (June 22-29, 2006).
Program Title "Kaleidoscope of scientific literacy: fusing new connections." 5 speakers will focus on the many facets of science literacy and the opportunities for science librarians to make connections and contributions across campus and in their wider communities.
Biology 130 activities
1. Tutorial 5 – Due each day this week to their tutorial section. Research a topic and write an essay (1000 words). Choose one of the following topics:
1. What is apoptosis? What is the role of apoptosis in development?
2. How can exercise influence gene expression?
3. What is the role of nitric oxide (NO) in cell signalling. How is this utilized in the pharmaceutical industry?
Students were told: “Use your textbook, the Library and/or the internet to find the necessary information. This is a big class, so you will probably have to use online sources. Note the APA style conventions for citing websites and online articles.”
2. Oxford Tutorial – All this week and next week. One on one, students discuss one of 3 assigned topics (covered in the lectures) with their TA. Some will be researching the topics, others just reading their notes:
Topics:
1. Describe how the proton-motive force is set up and how interfering with the proton-motive force was the focus of an early unsuccessful diet pill.
2. Explain what integrins are and their general function, and how the activity of integrins can be manipulated to dissolve abnormal clots.
3. Explain how cholesterol is taken up by animal cells, such as human cells, and how cholesterol contributes to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques.
Students researching beyond their course notes may ask for help with sources. Suggestions:
• Cell Biology textbooks
• Search a general science journal e.g. Scientific American for #2 and #3; Science; Nature etc.
• Database searches: Biology Digest; General Science
No doubt Google will be their first choice and it works fine.
From Sasa:
Hi everyone,
I recently did a second minor review of Health Studies Serials. This was my first project for Serials Changes at the Davis Library. With that reviewed, I have found some new titles that can be changed. It also showed that as I have worked with more lists, I have become more efficient identifying titles that can be changed.
I am still waiting to get some information from Debbie about actual cost savings and what we already got online for 2006 (Engineering, math, Computer Science, ...). Then I will add the final serial changes to one Davis spreadsheet which contains every department's serials changes and total price savings. This additional step is necessary so that ongoing total savings in serial subscriptions is known and kept track of at the department level.
If you have bought new serials with the saved money, please send me the titles (and price if you know it) so I can make a list of savings and new purchases gained from the savings.
The next list I will work on is Davis Reference and Davis General Serials. That will complete the Davis work. Debbie will complete the serial changes in 2007.
Dan will provide me with training on Chat Reference sometime in November or December. I am going to do chat during Jim's study leave. I may also assist Dan with some additional duties related to ELAS.
Ulrich's Serials Analysis System is another "project" I would like to work on. This system would be really helpful evaluating serials collections. I may suggest using this when I start to analyze the Porter department serials collections in 2006. I have already talked to Baiba and Carol. Baiba will give me more training on uploading files and doing some of the analysis that I have to do manually right now.
From Jon:
Hi folks,
I am currently carrying out my regular duties.
At present, the two big items on my agenda are:
(1) Creating the winter desk schedule
(2) e-reference on Monday’s with procedural training on Docutek for the following Sunday’s Librarian
Between these items I do bib searching, process new books, process donated books, process binding decision books and do web maintenance which includes fixing broken links and updates…..and miscellaneous as assigned.
From Carol:
Not much new from Health.
-Sasa just did a re-review of Health since this
was the first serials list we worked on and have learned how to refine the process since that first attempt. As a result, a few more potential changes were found.
-One of the research institutes is involved in a project looking at library services for long term care practitioners. A model for application in Ontario communities is part of the process. It won't have any effect on UW.
Optometry
-We've created a brochure of services on campus for
Optometry students (food, copier places, key numbers) so our international and new students will know how to find "stuff" efficiently on the "other side of campus".
-meetings with the architects are still ongoing to develop concept drawings for the expansion. A new library space/ information commons is part of the plans.
-We're putting together a handout and poster for the faculty mailroom to "push" e-reserves in the winter term. Right now we're experimenting with proactively creating any non-copyright limited materials as an e-reserve in addition to putting on reserve as print to try to "entice" faculty to move electronic.
-We'll be having the annual coffee drop-in later in December. An invite will come out. It would be a good chance to see the new (to us) carrels and our latest mini-reno last summer.
